Beach to Bush program a hit with students

05 Nov, 2009 09:42 AM
LONG Flat Public School students were taught how to overcome the dangers of beach rips when the Telstra Beach to Bush surf safety program visited the school last week.

The program is in conjuction with Surf Life Saving highlights the importance of beach safety to rural areas more than 50 kilometres from the beach.

Surf Life Saving statistics reveal beachgoers who live more than 50 kilometres inland from beaches are over-represented in drowning statistics because of their lack of knowledge and exposure to the ever-changing surf conditions.

While the program focuses primarily on beach safety, the aquatic safety skills taught also apply to rivers, dams, creeks, pools and other waterways.
