Dot's brave battle

21 Jan, 2010 03:52 PM
THE Beechwood General Store and Cafe is up for sale or lease after co-owner Dot Krogh was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer.

Ms Krogh starts 18 months of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy on Monday.

"This will be carried out in three month blocks," she said.

"I have decided to talk about it because I want this story to raise awareness. I want it to hit home.

"Since being diagnosed with this aggressive form of breast cancer in late November, I have had a mastectomy and been booked for the chemotherapy and radiotherapy already.

"But I have been blown away by the statistics (of breast cancer and caner generally). One in three people will be affected by cancer and a massive one in eight will be diagnosed with breast cancer - and that is men and women.

"I also had annual checkups including a mammogram. Which shows just how aggressive cancer can be," she said.

Ms Krogh's annual examinations are in January with last year's coming back clear.

Just 10 months later, after feeling lethargic and tired, she asked her GP to exam her breasts.

"I was told I had a hyperactive thyroid and that there was absolutely nothing wrong.

"A month later I noticed a small lump in my breast and an ultra sound came back as suspicious. A needle biopsy confirmed that I had breast cancer.

"A surgery date was booked and I was referred to a second surgeon who operated on me for a radical mastectomy.

Of the 12 lymph nodes removed, nine came back positive (cancerous).

"Unfortunate ly the surgery did not get it all and my chances of living a further 10 years are around 50 to 60 percent."

Generally a healthy and fit person, Ms Krogh has called for the age bracket for subsidised cancer screenings to come down from 50 years to at least 30 years of age.

But first Ms Krogh and partner Russell Churcher want to 'have some peace of mind' over the future of their successful business.

"We are just the 17th owner of the business since it first opened in 1888," Ms Krogh said.

"The general store is invariably the hub of the local community and we want that role to continue for this store.

"In the five years since we took over the business, we have made some changes while maintaining the important heritage aspect.

"Some of these improvements have been the inclusion of the cafe, fresh produce supplies, traditional confectionery such as choo choo bars and sherbet fountains ... and a how list of other traditional recipes.

"The uniqueness of the store is its major drawcard while the gourmet food and coffee is the real attraction.-

"This is a golden opportunity for someone to build themselves a great future."
