IF only for the fire brigade, we could have lost three homes.
That's the opinion of Barry Gill after fire destroyed his and wife Vera's Beechwood home and also impacted significantly on the home of their neighbour, Prue Glass.
The couple's home caught fire on Saturday evening. But it could have been worse, according to Mr Gill.
"If it weren't for the fire brigade, we could have lost three houses on Saturday night," Mr Gill said.
The fire started in a back shed of the Beechwood home and quickly spread throughout the house.
"I want to thank all the emergency services' crews for attending. The ambulance service, the Wauchope Fire Brigade, the Beechwood Rural Fire Service, police ? all the services helped out.
"In particular, Terrance Shaw from Pappinbarra was the first person to stop and he played our garden hose on Prue's house while we waited for the fire brigade.
"Everyone helped out even while there was stuff going off (exploding) everywhere."
The couple lost virtually everything in the fire except for a few personal items and the clothes they were standing in.
"I turned wood for 20 years and had quite an accumulation of wood turning gear which all went up in smoke.
"Vera had a substantial collection of hand-made dolls and teddy bear collections that are also gone too."
While the couple are devastated by the their loss and the impact on their neighbour, they are adamant they will rebuild their lives.
Mr Gill also said it was a timely reminder to double check on your home and content insurance.
"In times like this you really appreciate it. It's a godsend," he said.
Barry and Vera would like to give a special thanks to Erica and the team from Holiday Coast Credit Union and the Wauchope community for their kindess during this time.
