 New demerit system for drivers

New demerit system for drivers

18 Jun, 2009 08:41 AM
ACCIDENTLY slipping over the speed limit might not cost some drivers their licence.

In a move that will please many motorists the state government has introduced a new demerit point system for speeding.

The new system is more lenient on drivers who travel over the limit by less than 10kmh.

Under the new system drivers caught travelling 1-10kmh over the speed limit will now attract one demerit point as well as an $84 fine.

Minister for Roads Michael Daley, believes the new system will make it fairer for motorists as well as keep our roads safer.

"There is no such thing as safe speeding but I have always acknowledged that the system could be fairer for motorists who inadvertently speed by just a few kilometres over the limit," he said.

"That's why we've reduced the demerit point penalty for people caught driving up to 10kmh from three points to one."

Mr Daley also introduced the new system put in place for P-plate drivers.

From July 1, P2 drivers caught speeding from 1kmh to 30kmh over the limit will lose an additional demerit point.

For Wauchope High School students the new laws mean the same principle of one strike and you're out still applies for red p-plate drivers while green p-plate drivers have two chances.

"The one strike policy is pretty good it works for those doing the wrong thing," school captain Kaylee Hurrell said.

"It puts a fair bit of pressure on us to drive carefully but some don't get the message."
