IT could be just four weeks before the former Hastings Street IGA supermarket site is levelled.
Ian Guthrie from Complete Demolitions said he is confident the demolition work will be completed in that time frame before handing over the project to Classic Group.
"This is a standard job for us but we are continually unearthing old wares which we are passing on to local groups," he said.
"We have found several Marshalls drink bottles in the ceiling space that we have kept aside while we are expecting to find much more once we start knocking down the structure itself.
"Recycling plays a major part of everything we do - we recycle whatever we can.
"And that means places such as Bennetts Steel are taking as much of the recycled steel as they can. The hardwood flooring and the roofing tin are also being recycled while the steel columns from the store front are being kept locally too."
In particular, the timber dimensions are 'very unique' and ideal for recycling into flooring, he said.
During the demolition phase, Mr Guthrie estimated his employees would inject around $50,000 into the local economy through accommodation, fuel, food, hardware supplies and entertainment.
Meanwhile site manager for Classic Group, Rick Freestone, said he would also be employing locals when work commences on the new supermarket.
"I've lived in the Hastings for the past 20 years and will be employing locals where possible during the construction phase of the project," he said.
"Weather permitting, we expect to be at lock up stage by Christmas and anticipate finishing the works by the end of April.
"There is no major slab construction involved in the construction of the new supermarket. We use pre-cast concrete sides and, so far, everything is going according to plan.
"We have had WorkCover onsite and they are happy with the progress of the works and we are also adhering to all OH&S issues.
"Ian's crew has been very professional in their identification, handling and removal of any hazardous materials at the site.
"The public needs to be aware that the bus stop in Bransdon Street has been permanently moved to the northern end of the street and that the former bus stop site is now fenced off.".
The Co-op is working with Council to permanently relocate the bus seat and shelter to the new site.
