Timbertown venue for Australia Day celebrations

19/01/2006 1:03:23 PM
WAUCHOPE'S 2006 Australia Day celebrations will be centered on Timbertown.

Organiser, Frank Harrison, said the venue would help bring back those fond memories of our local and national history.

"Timbertown is where we relive the early timber and logging days and Australia Day is one of our biggest national celebrations," he said.

"The Rotary Club of Wauchope – just like many service groups across the country – are again the organizers of this event.

"We have a tremendous program of interest to suit all ages and there is no entry fee to participate in any of the games, the competitions or to join in the community fun day.

"This is the first time we celebrate Australia Day by combining the local timber and the early day traditions of Wauchope at Timbertown.

"Because all our activities are at our very own historical site, we have set up a bus service from the streets of town to the Timbertown oval and return on the day.

"The Wauchope RSL Club has very generously made their community bus available for shuttle services to the back gate of Timbertown each quarter hour from 9am to 10am and return from noon."

To catch the bus simply hail the driver as the bus follows the route from High Street along Blackbutt Drive and Cameron Street right down to Bain Street, then to Campbell Street, the bus stop in Bransdon Street to pick up at the Post Office then right along High Street and down beside Timbertown to the back gate and the oval.

The bus will follow the same route on the return trip.

The last morning run will be at Timbertown to ensure everyone can be comfortable for the official start of the program which commences at 10.30am.

"The program at Timbertown will commence at 9am with a selection of games for men, women and children and these will conclude in time for the official start," Mr Harrison said.

"Some of the games will include guessing competitions, nail driving, a timber naming competition (courtesy of State Forests and Woodworkers' Guild), a boot throw, cricket ball and tennis ball events and a chuck-the-saucepan lid.

"There is also a colouring competition being run with the awardees being announced on the day."

Mr Harrison said the program also includes a provision for wet weather with activities to move to the Maul n Wedge Restaurant.

Two bands – the Hastings Pipe Band and the Port Macquarie Band will join with Tony Ward who will sing colonial and other Australian songs to keep us all entertainment between other events, Mr Harrison said.

"The Australia Day ambassador, a very popular entertainer, Danielle Everett, will also sing for us when she gives her address," Mr Harrison said.

"I am really looking forward to this year's Australia Day activities when we go back to the bush and celebrate our big day at Timbertown on January 26."
