Karbowiak plunders Pirates attack

FOR the second week running a Beechwood batsman has starred with the bat.

Steve Karbowiak made 134 runs in a powerhouse innings to hit his first century in style with 23 boundaries.

Karbowiak's innings helped the Beechwood Colts third grade side to a two run victory over the Port Panthers Pirates at Wood Street on Saturday.

The humble Karbowiak was impressed with the Colts players' performance to chase down the Pirates impressive total of 282.

"It was a big run chase and we played really well," he said.

He was less forthcoming with the praise for his own performance.

"It was probably a bit of luck but I'll take it."

Luck or not the right-hander blasted nine sixes and fourteen fours to help claim the win - the only Beechwood win of the weekend.

Opener Anthony Hyde was solid in support hitting 62 runs to help the colts to 284 runs.

The Beechwood bowlers shared the wickets in the first innings and set up an exciting run chase for the batsmen in a tight contest.

FELLOW third-grade side, the Beechwood Warriors suffered a close loss against the Port Panthers Pirates Blue side with the Beechwood side sending the Pirates into bat at Tuffins Lane 2 on Saturday.

The Pirates were on the backfoot early before a middle order partnership between R Whyte and D Duckworth helped steer the homeside to a total of 196.

The Beechwood side started well early but met their match with J Smurthwaite tearing through the side taking an impressive 6/36 and swinging the match in the Pirates favour.

Unable to recover and with not enough wickets in hand the Warriors fell short by 12 runs.

THE fourth grade Beechwood Buffalos travelled to Kendall to meet Camden Haven on Saturday.

The Buffalos won the toss and elected to bat first and thanks to Glenn Pursehouse (51) and Richard Cook (47) hit a modest 146 off 34.4 overs.

The Camden Haven outfit were too good with the bat eventually all out for 155.

Veteran Tim Ostler took 3/20 while Glenn Pursehouse chipped in with three wickets as well but the Camden Haven were just too good on the day.

THE Beechwood Beavers took on the Wauchope RSL teachers' side in their fourth grade clash at Beechwood Oval.

The home side won the toss and took to the crease and met the two-pronged bowling attack of A Clarke (4/20) and T Lindsay (4/13) who tore through the Beavers batsmen.

After 28 overs the home side were bowled all out for just 76.

The Wauchope RSL side took to the chase easily scoring 2/82 off just 11.4 overs.
