Lyon's lone stand not enough in cricket

DESPITE a well-earned half-century from Blake Lyon the Wauchope RSL first grade side suffered their second defeat in as many weeks.

Facing a fired up Port Panthers Pirates outfit the Wauchope RSL were sent into the field at Andrews Park.

The Pirates swung the one-day game in their favour early on with opener SG Ware hitting 63 with good support throughout the list.

The bowlers struggled to claim wickets with Brian Fowler the best at 2/32.

After 40 overs the Pirates had compiled an impressive 4/255 and left the Wauchope chase ahead.

It didn't look good early with opener H Larance edging to the Pirates keeper for a duck.

J Blythe followed after scoring 25 before Blake Lyon showed the first of the Wauchope resistance until he was run-out on 55.

Brian Fowler followed up his form with the ball scoring 25 runs while L Hutchins was unbeaten on 29.

But it wasn't enough for the Wauchope boys who lost by 83 eventually ending on 8/170 after 40 overs.

President Dave Smith was confident of turning around the fortunes of the last two weeks.

"We were a bit slack in the field and our bowling wasn't up to scratch against the Pirates," he said.

"But there were some good signs with Blake Lyon and Ben Cutler showing promising form."

The Wauchope side suffered some big losses at the end of last season with Andrew Murrel moving to Brisbane and captain and New South Wales Country player of the year Bill Newell retiring.

"We're a young side this year and Bill and Andrew are big losses for us but we can't dwell on that," Mr Smith said.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how this young side grows over the season and hopefully we can get some good wins on the board.
