Seagulls show good signs in first hit-out

05 Nov, 2009 11:02 AM
THE Beechwood U12 Seagulls played their first game of the season against the Wauchope RSL "Abstract Plastics" at Beechwood over the last two weekends.

This was the first hit out for many of the players and whilst it took a week to shake off the cobwebs, the team showed that they have the skills, determination and attitude to be real contenders.

Week 1 saw Beechwood sent in to bat on a wicket where the ball moved around early - so much so that sundries top scored. Despite difficult conditions, Toby Dowton, Tenzin Tulau and Jak Dobbyns all got off to a good start and got amongst the runs.

Jayden Newman showed a lot of courage to take a heavy blow to the body and to keep on batting.

At the end of the allotted time, Beechwood was 7-78. Wauchope RSL responded with 2-114 at the end of play. Tristan Koch and Jayden Newman were the best of the bowlers, each taking a wicket. Tenzin Tulau took a screamer of a reflex catch at slip to combine with Jayden for the second wicket. Jayden was voted Player's Player.

Forget politics, a week's a long time in cricket. Week 2 saw a complete reversal in form for the Beechwood side.

Faced with an uphill battle to save the game, Logan Palmer, Jayden Newman, Isaac Fog and Tristan Koch showed true grit to stick around for another 7 overs and adding 12 more valuable runs. Wauchope then set out to get enough runs to get an outright win but the Beechwood attack was having none of that.

Led by Eoan Lawrie and ably supported by Tenzin Tulau, Gus Buthman, Toby Dowton, Huon Williams and Will Davison, the Beechwood bowlers tore through the Wauchope batsmen taking 8-59.

Logan Palmer was promoted up the order to opener for Beechwood's 2nd innings and was out to a smart catch after getting off to a good start.

Eoan Lawrie then backed up his bowling performance with 30 not out in a Player's Player performance to combine with Toby and Tenzin to steer Beechwood to 3-83 at the close of play. Despite the 1st innings loss, there was a lot to like in the way the Seagulls play the game.
