Jones featured in motocross magazine

17 Jan, 2008 04:00 AM
MOTOCROSS rider Jacqui Jones had to look twice when she saw photos of her spread over six pages of one of Australia’s premiere motocross magazines.

The 18-year-old Wauchope local wound up in a six page feature article in Dirt Action magazine after she took out the 2007 Honda Girls on the Gas ‘Final Showdown’ in Victoria.

The event held at the Bacchus Marsh circuit in late October pitted Jones against six riders, each representing their respective states, in a variety of categories.

The competition’s unique concept puts the competitors up against each other in the usual ‘On Bike’ sectors such as Technique Judging, Lap Time sector and 5 lap race, as well as a couple of ‘Off The Bike’ sectors including Public Speaking and a Fitness Assessment (Shuttle Run Beep Test).

Jacqui won the event and the story that ran on the event heavily featured her.

The Hastings Valley Motorcycle Club member admitted there were a few nerves about the article

“I was a little worried about what I was saying and what they would publish,” she said.

“I knew they were doing the story but it was still daunting.

"It was all good though the event was a lot of fun which made it easier,” she said.

The magazine article capped off a stellar year for Jones who has gone from strength to strength.

After moving into the senior ranks midway through 2006 Jones has tried to race in as many competitions she can including the Oceania Motocross Championships in Geelong,

The NSW and National Motocross Series, NSW Sprint Series and many more.

With all the competitions, club days and school work Jones has had a busy year and hopes 2008 will be a successful one for her in the motocross arena.

“Last year was pretty hectic,” she said.

“Now that I’ve finished my HSC I have a lot more time to concentrate on my riding.

“I want to ride in as many competitions as possible and continue to improve my riding.

“Its good because my whole family rides so it’s easier and I ride a lot with them and my boyfriend which pushes me to try harder.

“Riding with the boys helps so much because you spend the whole time just trying to keep up.

If her success last year is any indication it could be the other way round for Jones before she knows it.

Meanwhile the Hastings Valley Motorcycle Club has announced it will promote an all-females free come-and-try-it day in early February.

This day is designed for any females who are interested in riding motorcross on the club’s Hastings Valley Raceway track.

The club will provide instructors for the day at no charge while Jacqui Jones will also be attending to assist any newcomers to the sport.

The Gazette will announce more details of this day when they are available.
