ON a quiet piece of land west of the Pacific Highway a hard-working sporting club was achieving amazing results until fire wiped out their home.

The Hastings Valley Archery Club is a tightknit group with almost 100 members both junior and adult who not only enjoy their sport, but each other's company.

The group bonds around the campfire on regular trips.

Many of their junior and senior competitors place in the top three at regional, state and national tournaments.

Home for the archers is 103 acres of lush State Forest with all the necessary features and challenges to hone the skills of both junior and senior archers.

Bushfire ripped through the land on October 1, a day before the club travelled to Moonan Flat, near Scone, for the state titles.

The site was wiped out, their four shooting ranges devastated and 60 targets destroyed.

"Our practice range was threatened by the fire but we are able to shoot on it," said club secretary Kiley Palmer. "But the ranges are lost and deemed a hazardous area with trees fallen.

"State Forests wanted to do an audit of the site but it was too dangerous.

"A specialist tree feller is going out there to remove dangerous trees.

"For us the fire is devastating."

The club worked quietly in the background of the local sporting scene sourcing targets and financing the club through their own hard work and a $5000 grant from the state government.

Since the fire members have met to discuss the future.

Options include remaining on the site, opposite the go-kart track on the Pacific Highway, or looking for a new home.

"We've talked about trying to get the ranges back up to scratch and recovering the land or starting again," Ms Palmer said.

"It will take years for the site to get back to normal."

The Hastings Valley Archery Club is seeking donations of particular types of plastic to make new targets or financial donations to get back on their feet.
