Pendragon across the line in tight finish

05 Nov, 2009 09:55 AM
LAST Saturday's easterly breeze saw nine boats contend the club championship race.

The conditions proved a testing component of the day, with many crews constantly reassessing their methodology in order to meet the demands of a variable wind.

The Scream started well, and an early lead saw them retain a favourable position throughout the early stages of the race.

However it was a lead overshadowed by the presence of Pendragon, the boat clearly doing well under a larger crew, as hardened skipper Ray Lance press-ganged his son, Daniel Lance, into Prindle servitude for the day; a desperate measure doubtless designed to assuage fears of yet another Cherub victory.

Pendragon and The Scream took it in turns to lead the fleet, before Indefatigable, having gained ground mid-way through the race, were able to establish a lead over both boats.

Ian and Kay Latham's return to the water in the fabled Rockhopper was one marred by a popped eyelet, however their revisitation subsequent to the acquisition of a new, unpopped eyelet, remains a much anticipated event.

The Lentz duo were quick off the beach and to round the course, as were Highly Explosive, and of Ian Oxenford's Limerick there was little to be seen save for a glint of banana yellow beneath the all-encompassing clouds of spray.

Bumsteer and A Little Tacky seemed to be enjoying some close racing throughout the course.

Pendragon was, however, first across the line. Indefatigable came second ahead of The Scream at third.

Thanks go to George Watt for an incomparable effort in setting the course and sounding the boats across the line.

Saturday will hail the beginning of the Port Macquarie-Queen's Lake interclub to be held at Queen's Lake.

Both sailing clubs will battle it out in a bloodthirsty and often illegitimate struggle for success. This is an open event, and lapsed members are encouraged to present themselves and their boat in expectation of a two o'clock start.

Non-members are also welcome to join for a sail or simply to watch. Queen's Lake has a long history of success in this regatta, and punters harbour expectations of a robust and staunch defence of the title on home water.
