Rhali set for Jets W-League stardom

30 Oct, 2008 04:00 AM
RHALI Dobson is set for women’s soccer stardom.

If her current meteoric rise through the women’s soccer ranks is anything to go by it won’t be long before Dobson is a household name.

At just 16 years of age her selection for the Newcastle Jets W-League soccer team will make her one of the youngest players on the field.

In a career littered with major achievements her selection in the Jets side has propelled her to the highest women's league competition in the country.

In its inaugural season the W-League will feature eight teams from across Australia including the seven men's A-League teams as well as a Canberra side.

For Dobson it came almost as a welcome surprise after experiencing weeks of frustration thanks to a stress fracture to her left fibula.

The stress fracture occurred at the grand final for the Blue Water League whilst playing for the Wauchope side and put Dobson on crutches for weeks.

The injury initially meant that she couldn’t attend the Jets tryouts but was invited back to trial for the side three weeks ago.

Following the trial Jets coach Garry Phillips offered Dobson a contract to play with the Newcastle side.

“I was just glad to get the trial and when he offered me the contract I was speechless,” she said.

“It definitely gave me a huge boost after being injured.

“I can’t wait to play with and against the best players in the country,” she said.

Dobson was thrown straight into the deep end on the weekend playing for the Jets against Canberra in Newcastle coming away with a win and a confidence boost.

She came on in the second half and played under the direction of coach Garry Phillips who praised her debut – especially considering she was on crutches three weeks ago.

Dobson will have to get used to late nights and lack of sleep thanks to the travel involved with playing in the W-League.

She will fly to Adelaide tomorrow morning for a Friday night game against Adelaide FC.

The hectic workload is something that Dobson knows she has to get used to with her HSC still a top priority.

“It will be extremely busy that’s for sure,” she said.

“I really want to do well with my schooling and already my family have been so supportive and fantastic I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”

Dobson is just happy to be playing amongst the best players in Australia and says despite feeling a few nerves says she isn’t intimidated.

"It's good because for once I'm not the smallest girl in the squad,” she said.

"The Jets girls were all really nice and welcoming so I'm just looking forward to running out on the field and doing my thing.”
