Comeback: But Blues draw with Makos

18 Jun, 2009 09:45 AM
AFTER a nail biting finish, it was a 42 all draw for the Wauchope Blues First Grade team and the last placed Halliday Point Makos, following their match which was transferred to Jack Neal Oval last Sunday afternoon.

The Makos were leading at half time by 30 points to 12 after they had run in 5 converted tries to the Blues 2 converted tries.

A good second half comeback by the Blues gave their supporters something to cheer about in what turned out to be an exciting and gripping spectacle.

The Blues were first to post points on the board after Tim Coombes barged his way over in the 8th minute beside the posts. Dustin Prosser converted the try, taking the Blues to a 6 point to nil lead.

Five minutes later the Blues were in for their 2nd try after Jason Holland crashed his way over under the posts. Prosser added the extras taking the Blues to a 12 point to nil lead.

It now looked like the Blues were going to go on and score at will, but the Makos had other ideas as they went on the rampage, racing through holes in the Blues defence, crossing for five converted tries, to take their score at half time to 30 points to the Blues 12.

Hallidays Points continued their good form early in the second half as they went on to score an early converted try, extending their lead to 36 points to 12 before the Blues regathered their composure and went on the attack.

Dustin Prosser was the first to cross the line, going on to convert his own try to take the Blues score to 18.

Tim 'Pumpkin" Coombes was next as he raced through to score his second of the day. Prosser made the easy conversion to move the Blues score along to 24.

Minutes later Blues winger Matt Hensley dived over in the corner to score, with the score now Hallidays Point 36 to Wauchope's 28.

The Makos then showed they still had something in the tank as they raced in another converted try, to take their score to 42 points to the Blues 28.

With approximately 10 minutes left on the clock the Blues were awarded a penalty 20 metres out from the try line, which led to full back Luke Davis diving over to score out wide, and with the try not converted the score was now 42 points to 32.

It was only 2 minutes later that Davis made a 90 dash up field to score his second try of the day out wide. The conversion attempt was waved away with the Blues tally now 36.

With the minutes ticking down, the Blues went once more on the attack when second rower Jason Holland barged through the defence to race away and score a good try. Again the conversion attempt was waved away, with the Blues tally now within 2 points of the Makos score.

With the Wauchope spectators on their feet shouting encouragement for their team, the Blues made one last ditch effort to cross the line, but were thwarted by the Makos defence, who in doing so, gave away a penalty on the line. The Blues decided to take a shot at a penalty goal which was successfully kicked by Prosser to level the scores on the bell to 42 points all.

Blues players who performed well were, Tim Coombes, Adam McMurray, Jason Holland, Shaun Gregory and Dean Hurrell.
