Men of League charity sports dinner

18 Jun, 2009 01:00 AM
TICKETS are now available for the Men of League dinner.

The event, which is also a fundraiser, has attracted strong support from some of the former greats of the game as well as a crop of current local players.

Wauchope Blues president, Peter Ninness, said tickets to the event are now available.

"The Men of League dinner will be held at the Wauchope RSL Club on Saturday July 4 with tickets costing $35 per person for tables of eight," Ninness said.

"Tickets are now available from the RSL Club's bottle shop.

"The night has attracted plenty of interest with the likes of Dane Sorenson, Noel Kelly, Ian Schubert, Royce Ayliffe, Jim Hall, Harry Wells, Dennis Tutty, Mick Stone, John Baker, Ron Boden, John Elford, Jim Murphy, Ken Hey, Bob Boland and Tom Mooney all indicating they will be attending.

"If any league or sport followers want to attend the dinner, they can also choose to make a donation to the Men of League in order to have one of these former greats of the game sitting at their table.

"I think there will be plenty of interest in this innovation to the dinner," Ninness said.

"The cost is just $100 on top of the ticket purchase price ... considering the quality of the former greats who have already booked in to attend the night."

As well as the dinner, the night will also include a fundraising raffle.

One of the features of this will be the auction of a signed and framed drawing of South Sydney's heroic John Sattler.

Local artist and sport enthusiast, Eric Carney produced the drawing of the Rabbitohs great who signed the treasured drawing recently after learning it would be auctioned for the MOL Sportsman's Dinner.

"While I was holidaying in Queensland, Sattler, very generously, took time out to come and meet me," Carney said.

"The plan is to have the drawing on display at various outlets around the Hastings to help promote the dinner and, hopefully, encourage more people to come along on the night.

"I am really proud that he took the time to actually sign the drawing, which shows Sattler being chaired off the ground after playing 70 minutes of the 1970 grand final with a broken jaw."

The compere will be Marshall Loadsman and interviewers, Craig Martin and Mick McDonald with auctioneers, Mick Stone and Anthony Coombes.

The jumbo raffle proceeds will go to the Wauchope Junior League while the auction items proceeds, Men of League and Wauchope RSL Blues and the Wauchope Junior League.
