North Coast Public Health Unit Director, Paul Corben said that fine smoke particles can travel deep into the lungs.
"Health problems such as bronchitis, itchy eys, throat irritation and runny nose can be caused by invisible smoke particles," Mr Corben said.
"People with lung conditions such as asthma, emphysema or bronchitis should be vigilant with their treatment programs and follow their Action Plans," Mr Corben added.
To minimise the negative effects of bushfire smoke people with existing health conditions are advised to:
* Limit the amount of time spent outdoors,
*?Stay indoors with windows and doors closed, or stay in air-conditioned premises, and
*?Avoid or reduce vigorous exercise.
"If symptoms of breathlessness continue or worsen, people should seek medical advice," said Mr Corben.
