Phil Saville wins men's bowls singles final

WAUCHOPE Men's Bowling Club has crowned a new Major Singles Champion after the final was played in ideal conditions last Saturday afternoon between Ken Ansley and Phil Saville.

Phil flew out of the blocks to set up a commanding lead playing beautiful draw bowls, with the majority of ends being only a metre from the maximum distance allowed.

When Ken finally got the mat, he threw a couple of short ends in to try and change the distance somewhat.

Ken's strategy seemed to work after being down 18 - 5 at one stage to claw his way back to be right in the game at 19 - 15.

The turning point came at the next end when Phil played his last bowl to grab four shots and set up an unassailable lead to go on and win the match by 31 points to 21.

Congratulations to Phil Saville the 2012 Major Singles Champion.

The C Grade Singles Final was also played on the afternoon between Shane Manning and John Lewis.

Shane also lead by a country mile at one stage and John clawed his way back to grab four shots to level the scores at 30 all.

Both players were struggling with their weight with the green very slick. Play came down to the last bowl from each player with Shane holding shot, John left his last bowl a little short and Shane was declared the winner by the barest of margins 31 points to 30.

Last Wednesday had good numbers turn up for single entry club select. Twenty Six players' fronted the starter and the winners of the afternoon were Phil Mcleod, John Overgaard and Adolf Giacovani with a margin of +23. Runners up were John Smith and Rod Moloney with a margin of +17.
