Paramedics were called to a workplace at Huntingdon about 8.40am and made it to the scene by 8.46am.
Station officer Ian Dwyer said his colleagues worked to stabilise the 50-year-old man who had partially severed his right arm below the elbow, as well as two fingers from his left hand cutting timber.
The ambulance was provided with a police escort by highway patrol officers to Port Macquarie Base Hospital and arrived at 10am.
Station officer Dwyer said it appeared the man was cutting firewood on a machine which used a guillotine and conveyor belt when the incident occurred.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service's spokesman Peter Cummings said the man's arm was irretrievable and was forced to be amputated.
The Westpac helicopter left Port Macquarie about 1pm and transported to the man to John Hunter Hospital.
He remains in a serious condition according to a spokeswoman for Hunter New England Area Health Service.
