There will be cheers all around with the return of our conductor, Miriam Lattimore who will be with us again after an eight weeks overseas holiday with her husband, Bruce.
Among the highlights was the visit to the Treorchy Men's Choir. Miriam wrote -
"Wow! Being in the same room with about 60 Welsh blokes singing their hearts out was amazing.
Treorchy (Welsh-Treorci) is situated in the Rhondda Valley district, just north of Cardiff.
The choir rehearses in the Treorchy Primary School hall. There are no chairs set out in rows, just individual ones scattered about.
They rehearse standing the whole time, but some of the older guys sit down some or all of the time.
Last night they sang in English and Welsh. All of it was wonderful, but the change in tone and emotion was tangible when they sang in Welsh.
The choir was founded in the early 1800s, when the whole Rhondda Valleys area was filled with collieries (coal mines). Singing was a form of entertainment after a hard day's work.
It has evolved into a huge concern, though still classified as "amateur". Some of the men have been in the choir for over 60 years.
We bought two of their CDs, one of which is almost entirely sung in Welsh.
You will have a new appreciation for "Calon Lan" when I play you the Treorchy version of it!"
When we return on July 17 it would be great to welcome new faces (and voices) to our group.
There is no need for auditions or the ability to read music, all you need is a love of singing.
We meet at 6.15pm in the Bethel Church Hall in High Street.
We sing for an hour, break for a cuppa and a chat and leave to go home at 8.30 with a "song in our heart".
