Port Macquarie-Hastings Council took advantage of the work being done to hook up Beechwood houses to sewerage under the Small Towns Sewerage Scheme to bring forward the work on that section of Beechwood Road, Mayor Peter Besseling said.
It's a great result for the local community, Cr Besseling said, with work to upgrade the section of Beechwood Road between Bain Bridge and Rosewood Road also set to get under way before Christmas.
Combining the village sewerage and road project was a cost-effective use of council funds, he said, which allowed the road work to be undertaken ahead of schedule and freed up funds for other road upgrades and maintenance.
The just-completed section of Beechwood Road was due to be rehabilitated in the 2016-17 Operational Plan but works were brought forward to coincide with the completion of the new sewer rising main.
"It was a smart way of operating from the council's perspective to tie in the two projects," Cr Besseling he said.
There is a large infrastructure backlog across the Hastings local government area and the council is doing what it can to tackle the most urgent projects as efficiently as possible with the funds available.
The new section of Beechwood Road is designed to cope with flooding, with "rock pitching" in place on either side of the new section of road to protect against scouring by floodwater.
It is also wider, better drained and safer, the council said.
The council had begun plans for the road upgrade back in 1986, the council's group manager infrastructure development Gary Randall said.
