A Fire and Rescue NSW Wauchope brigade spokesperson said about 20 residents on the affected floor were relocated to another wing due to smoke.
"Two engines from Wauchope and one from Port Macquarie attended an auto fire alarm at Bundaleer about 1am on Thursday morning," the spokesperson said.
"Brigade members used breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera - used to check behind doors and in the wall cavity of buildings - to check, locate and then extinguish the fire.
"There was a failure to an electrically powered sterilising unit in a service room at the nursing home.
Bundaleer staff were instrumental in moving the residents to safety with many staff called in to assist said a Bundaleer spokesperson.
"The 20 affected residents were cared for and moved to another area of the facility by the Bundaleer staff, police and paramedics"
The spokesperson said all emergency services personnel worked cohesively with the staff at the Bundaleer Gardens Hostel.
