Danny Mooney in his truck and others in cars carried the clubs. In November that year Gunnedah golfers did the same, flying down for the return visit.
Little did any of those travellers expect that the inter-club visits would last this long and THIS weekend we celebrate the 50th visit to Wauchope by the golfers of Gunnedah. Back in early May we sent 80 golfers west and were greeted with cold, windy and most unappetising weather - in fact it hailed as well! We trust that we can welcome our visitors with better weather and we know our course will be in top condition. Our guests will be treated to golf on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, BBQ breakfasts, a dinner-dance on Saturday night and reuniting with old friends. Numerous friendships have flourished over the years and are still being forged.
Unfortunately many of the originals who made the initial visits are no longer with us, but we have Alan Ninness and Barry Freeman still playing and we've managed to track down and invite old faces like Graham Gibson, Ray Tranby, John Harrington and Dick Farrant to play and join the celebrations. Gunnedah will send a team of 64 golfers and we are looking forward to the competition , the camaraderie, the odd ale, top food and fun.
Next year is the 50th anniversary and so we shall probably celebrate that as well!
