The removal of the project from council's 2012-2013 works program, and the placement of a temporary learn to swim pool on the site of the development application approved heated indoor pool, has left many members of the community believing the project has been abandoned for other priorities.
President of the Wauchope Community Heated Indoor Pool Association, Di Gilbert, stood before general manager Craig-Swift McNair and councillors at the October council meeting with several recommendations to move the project forward and allay concerns the project has been forgotten.
Wauchope residents have overwhelmingly endorsed the construction of a six lane heated indoor pool to complement the town's 50 metre swimming pool, with funds raised from the sale of Timbertown to be directed toward the project.
To date, council's Wauchope Pool Refurbishment Reserve has been credited $50,000 for the 2012-2013 financial year - interest earned off the proceeds of the sale of Timbertown.
"We wait with considerable interest council's decision on what further interest will be allocated to the Wauchope Pool Refurbishment Reserve," Mrs Gilbert said.
"I understand council is under pressure to replace the 50 metre pool and I'm sure the community will continue to work with council to achieve an excellent facility of which we can all be proud."
Mr Swift-McNair assured the committee in writing that the placement of a temporary learn to swim centre on the site will not impact negatively on the future of the project.
Mrs Gilbert believes council has an opportunity to reinvigorate community confidence by supporting the committee's bid for National Stronger Regions funding on a dollar for dollar basis. The estimated total cost of the heated indoor pool project is $3.19 million.
"We are extremely disappointed with council's attitude to this project. Under the administrator we had a commitment in council's works program for the allocation of funding in the 2012-2013 financial year and completion of the facility by the end of June 2013," Mrs Gilbert said.
"Council's removal of this project from its works program leaves the impression that the project has been abandoned in favor of other priorities."
The committee has recommended council change the name of the reserve fund to the Wauchope Heated Indoor Pool Reserve to more accurately reflect its intended purpose; the construction of the heated indoor pool be prioritised as stage one of the Wauchope Aquatic Centre and that it makes a commitment to work with the committee to achieve a result.
Mr Swift-McNair said the committee's concerns will be considered.
"Mrs Gilbert raised a number of issues during her address to council that will need to be considered further by councillors and Council staff prior to any determination," the general manager said.
"The first step will be for staff to brief councillors more fully on the issues raised."
