The Wauchope cab driver is Roger Hale who has been a devoted greyhound man himself for decades.
Hale and his good friends Allan and Marilyn Munro had bred a litter of pups by Oaks Road from their former Wentworth Park winner I'm A Teaser.
The dogs were in training with Bruce Caden but some were finding it difficult to run out the 520m required to make them capable of winning at Wentworth Park.
One of those was a bitch Hale and Munro had named Mighty Alice.
Hale approached his neighbour Maunder to see if he would take over the training of Mighty Alice.
Maunder jumped at the chance and on Saturday night at Wauchope's greyhound race meeting, Mighty Alice landed a confident betting plunge when storming to a five and a half length victory in a 384m Maiden heat.
She downed Grumble with a length and three-quarters to Rohaise in third.
It was her second race start for Maunder but a brilliant 22.09 trial on the Wauchope track the previous Sunday instilled great confidence in the bitch's connections.
And Mighty Alice did not let them down, beginning well and settling second until the first turn when she railed beautifully to take the lead and then go on to an easy victory.
Gavin Maunder is 59 and has been a greyhound man since 1991.
"We were living in Gunnedah at the time," Maunder said. "One of my mates was Rick Rose whose father Geoff was the chairman of the greyhound owners and trainers association.
"I would help Rick and Geoff walk their dogs. Geoff sold me my first greyhound."
Maunder's wife Nea has health problems and that forced a move initially to Taree and then Kew before settling on Wauchope as their home.
"We followed our doctor," Maunder said.
Hale and Munro have had great success with the I'm A Teaser bloodlines.
The Munros whelped the litter that produced nine-time winner I'm A Teaser as well as the outstanding I'm Hot Property, a runner-up in a Group 1 final at Cannington in Perth.
I'm A Teaser has whelped two litters, one by champion sire Where's Pedro which included a couple of handy performers, and the litter by Oaks Road which includes Mighty Alice.
"They struggle to get a strong 500 metres," Hale admitted. "But there is a career for them on tracks like Wauchope and that is why Mighty Alice is here with Gavin."
Mighty Alice will run in the Maiden final at Wauchope in a few weeks.
She was confidently backed in the ring, firming from 5-1 to start 2-1.
"She ran right up to the trial," said Maunder.
