Pirates moved to almost five points shy of Macquarie Hotel on the table after beating defending premier Wauchope RSL at Oxley Oval.
Ben Woodward and co required just 40 runs to win in the second innings, but at 2-0 it looked like Wauchop RSL could score a remarkable victory.
The Pirates recovered to win by seven wickets. Peter Colver, who is in fine touch, scored 35 of the 42 run total.
Brady Taylor (4) and Cameron Ashe (2) were at the crease to steer Pirates home.
Woodward was the destroyer in RSL's second dig. He took 5-15 from six overs in the win.
Nick Bartlett bowled tightly, taking 3-10 from six.
Macquarie Hotel was the other winner on Saturday, but opposition batsman Jesse Schmidt still had good day.
Schmidt scored 105 not out in the second innings to put the kybosh on any outright hopes from the opposition.
Macquarie wrapped up a first-innings win but couldn't go much further, with Schmidt and co batting out the afternoon.
The Pies scored 5-170 in 32 overs. They were rolled for 109 in the first innings while chasing Macquarie's 205.
Phil McVicar was the other not out batsman when the afternoon came to an end. He scored an unbeaten eight.
