The whole of the school's Year 1 students sat watching him draw pictures and listened to an informative talk on the author, his books and how he writes them.
Seemingly almost equally rapt in the experience were a number of the school's teachers, who have spent many hours reading his books to their classes.
"All the teachers love his work," one said, "his characters are people we can relate to, his illustrations are beautiful and the kids love the books."
Among his popular works are Mutt Dog, Amelia Elliott's Garden, Emily Loves to Bounce, Harry and Amy and The Man Who Loved Boxes.
His appreciative younger audience asked a lot of quite sensible questions about the author and his work, including where he got his characters' names from, why they did certain things and how he went about writing the books.
The school was honoured to have the author pay them a visit.
