According to Ian Kiernan AO, chairman and founder of Clean Up Australia, this announcement is a long time coming with many Australians concerned about the disgraceful state of our highways and roadsides; and is particularly welcome with Clean Up Australia Day which is celebrating 25 years on Sunday March 1, 2015.
"We field many complaints at Clean Up Australia from frustrated and concerned volunteers who want to clean up their local roadsides but cannot gain permission due to ownership disputes and safety issues," said Mr Kiernan.
Ian Kiernan believes that the adoption of the litter hotline combined with the implementation of cash for containers recycling will go a long way to help reduce roadside littering. In fact, figures from both the 2013 Clean Up Australia Rubbish Report and the yet to be released 2014 Report indicated the most common rubbish types on roadside sites in NSW were beverage containers and fast food packaging.
"Introduction of the Rubbish app as part of the NSW rubbish hotline will be welcomed by volunteers as it will enable them to identify key rubbish hotspots so that they can register to clean them up."
Clean Up Australia Day 2015 is your chance to put yourself in the picture and join hundreds of thousands of volunteers who will take their white and yellow bags and don their gloves to clean up their local community. Over the last quarter of a century volunteers have donated more than 27.2 million hours towards caring for the environment through Clean Up Australia Day, by removing an estimated 288,650 tonnes of rubbish from 145,754 sites across the country.
The Wauchope Lions are asking for volunteers to be part of Clean Up Australia Day in our community.
If you are interested, the group will be meeting at 8am at Yippen Creek Reserve, Wauchope. Volunteers are being asked to bring their own gloves. For more information, contact Bob Jones on 6586 1128.
