As part of the lead-up to the Centenary of Rail celebrations planned for April 2015, organisers are keen to involve the younger generation in the historical occasion.
"The celebrations should include people of all ages, "said Centenary of Rail organising committee chair, Jeannette Rainbow.
"The re-enactment ceremony planned for the actual centenary day, Tuesday, April 14 2015, will be of particular interest to school children.
"In addition there are other events and activities planned for that week - the second week of the April school holidays, "she said.
These will include the community celebration following the re-enactment, shuttle rides to Telegraph Point and Kendall over the four days when the historic rail motor the 'Tin Hare' is in town, miniature train rides, a model train exhibition, as well as photographic and historical exhibitions.
Organisers are hoping for the most involvement from students through the schools' competition.
"We decided on a special competition for school students of all ages because it is important that we all participate in, and feel part of, the celebrations," she added.
Students of all ages can enter the competition to test their skills and knowledge.
There will be three divisions with prizes for first and runner-up in each section:
* K-2 students will be asked to colour in a cartoon drawing of a train at the station
* Years 3-6 will present a single page collage relevant to the historic event
* High school students will be asked to assume the role of a reporter covering the event for the (formerly known) Hastings Gazette on 14 April 1915 and will prepare an original front page, complete with masthead details. The presentation should cover of events on the day, interviews, some background on how rail transport came to the Hastings as well as the likely social and economic impact the advent of rail is likely to have.
Competition details and entry forms will be sent shortly to all schools and will also be published in the Wauchope Gazette.
All entries should be posted or delivered to the Wauchope Gazette office where a selection will be placed on display.
Winning, and other selected, entries will also be on exhibition at the Wauchope Show which runs from 10-11 April 2015.
