RSL should secure the outright next weekend, and with a Port Pirates outright looking unlikely in the other match, a spot in the decider beckons.
It was a crazy day of cricket Andrews Park on Saturday, with the highlight being Bailey Smith's 2-5 from three overs the highlight of the first innings.
Smith had the batsmen in all sorts of trouble in a great spell of spin bowling.
"He was beating them all over the place," Gough said.
"He had an absolute rip-snorter of a first innings. He just bowled good lines, and they tried to hit out but didn't get anywhere."
Smith's great spell helped RSL roll a one-man-short Comboyne for just 56, before declaring at 9-109.
That left stand in skipper Mick Gough's team an hour to bowl at Comboyne, and they relished the task.
Comboyne finished the day 7-41, still 12 behind the RSL total.
Jason Blythe also bowled well on Saturday. He picked up 2-6 in the second innings.
Anoop Gopalakrishnan snared 2-9.Gough won't be in the team to bring home a good win next weekend. He'll be back down to RSL's seconds side.
"Do the job and get dropped," he said.
Pirates are 1-14 in reply to Port City Leagues Magpies' 163 in the other match of the round at Laurieton Oval. Craig McElroy had Jack Connolly caught for a duck.
