Members of the Wauchope RSL sub-branch have instigated the campaign that aims to create a "stunning visual display of poppies" at the Wauchope cenotaph and the Centenary Memorial Wall at the Wauchope RSL on Saturday, April 25.
Gay Hancock, wife of Wauchope RSL sub-branch president, Des Hancock, has been instrumental in driving the project and estimates that although poppy numbers are already in the "thousands", she would like to see as many as possible.
"We've had a great response from the Wauchope Show Society who has made nearly 500 poppies so far and the Broken Bago Day Club has been busy making them as well," said Gay.
"Some are knitted, others crocheted, felted or sewn but making them can be as simple as using some red and black crepe paper and a pipe cleaner.
"It would be wonderful to have the community get behind this and make the display as stunning as possible," said Gay.
The project is a great way for the community to pay tribute to those Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations on the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915.
Simple instructions to make your own poppies are available online and also at the Wauchope Gazette office and the Wauchope RSL.
All poppies can be dropped at the Wauchope Gazette office at 47 Hastings Street Wauchope or at the Wauchope RSL, Young Street, Wauchope.
