Volunteers from both service organisations joined forces recently to give Wauchope District Memorial Hospital's garden a fresh new look.
A dozen workers descended on the hospital grounds at 8.30am that day to spend six hours on picks, shovels and wheelbarrows with the goal of creating a peaceful place for patients to relax.
The hospital's Executive Officer/Director of Nursing, Ann Bodill, said the Lions and Masons were great friends of the hospital, supporting Palliative Care, the Urgent Care Centre, the Rehabilitation Unit and, now, the hospital grounds.
"Everything these wonderful people do for us improves patient amenity or helps patients with their treatment and recovery process," Mrs Bodill said. "They truly are generous, community-minded people."
The idea for the garden makeover was raised last July at a meeting between hospital staff and the Lodge Star of Wauchope.
Masons Colin Terry, Ted Bricknell, Tony Ostler and Robert Drysdale committed to raising funds for the landscape work and the Lions Club of Wauchope soon came on board to provide the labour, as well as additional funds.
The Masons ensured the volunteer garden blitz team was well nourished on the day, providing a barbecue lunch for the troops.
"This really has been a team effort," Mrs Bodill said.
"The Lions, and community members John Bodill, Paul Whitley and Evonne Murdoch, worked so hard in very warm conditions.
"They shifted several ute-loads of gravel, dug up the old garden beds and transformed them with new plants that will really improve the amenity of the courtyard area for our patients, who love to sit on the veranda and look over the gardens.
"It was hard work but the end result is magnificent."
