Called the Cameron Grange Independent Living Units, its three-stage development will be funded completely by the club and provide what it describes as superior living on the club’s doorstep.
Aimed to allow convenient living close to shops, facilities and the river, the Cameron Grange project is a part of the club’s strategy to continue to thrive in a time when a lot of RSL clubs are closing their doors.
CEO of Wauchope RSL Wayne Saley said it was an exciting time for all involved.
“It really benefits the Wauchope community,” he said. “Everything we are using is local, such as Timbertown Kitchens supplying the kitchens, the builder will be from Wauchope, even the blinds and shades will be from the town.”
As an added bonus, people will get 100 per cent of their money back with this scheme, Mr Saley said.
The club will always own the units but the purchaser will buy a lifetime in them.
“If you live for 50 years that’s great, if it’s only five, maybe not so good,” Mr Saley said. “At least you’ll still get your money back plus a percentage of the capital gain.”
Wauchope RSL is hoping there will be 81 units in total. At the moment there are only commitments for 75 but the club expects to reach the target number.
“They will be one, two and three-bedroom units and it is a massive thing for the town,” Mr Saley said. “If you take other senior living places into account, they are not as conveniently located.
“Here we have the river, tennis courts, shopping centre and more all located within walking distance.”
With RSL clubs closing their doors more often these days, Mr Saley said the main goal was to make the club self-sufficient.
“We won’t need pokies any more. “
These units will ensure the club is here for another 80 years at least,” he said. “As an added bonus the proceeds out of stage one will allow us to refurbish the club and still be able to complete stages two and three.”
Everyone who buys a unit will be given 50 years’ membership of the club.
