The co-op was very disturbed that our major supplier of packaged foods, IGA, was named in the program regarding supplies emanating out of South Australia.
The owner of IGA, Metcash Limited, released a statement on May 5 as follows: “Metcash takes its obligations as a responsible corporate citizen very seriously. If we become aware of unethical behaviour by one of our suppliers we investigate, and if validated we take appropriate action. This could include cancelling supply arrangements, which we have done on a number of previous occasions. Metcash will follow up all allegations made on the Four Corners program in so far as they relate to suppliers of our IGA network.”
The Hastings Co-operative Limited condemns the practices exposed in the Four Corners program and fully supports Metcash in its determination to investigate and act on any allegation made against any supplier of the IGA network.
The Hastings Co-op at all times endeavours to act ethically towards suppliers, producers and employees and we greatly value the many long term relationships we have built up.
The co-op will continue to support our local producers and suppliers as this is the best way we can ensure the growth of local jobs and the supply of quality produce to our customers.
Allan Gordon, Chief Executive Officer Hastings Co-operative
