The Wauchope Hospital Volunteers is a branch of the United Hospital Auxiliaries of NSW. The Wauchope Hospital Volunteers started as the Hospital Auxiliary more than 40 years ago, and included Pink Ladies in 1976. Since then, the group has continued to grow over the years and now has a membership of more than 25 local residents.
The group has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the hospital over the years, including an extraordinary $90,000 in the past 18 months for the purchase of essential equipment for the hospital's Palliative Care Unit and Rehabilitation Unit. The Volunteers were the biggest single contributor to the Wauchope Gazette's 2014 Community Appeal for the Palliative Care Unit, which to date has raised more than $120,000 to improve patient amenity at the facility. The funds raised are largely due to the efforts of a group of volunteers and supporters who bake and create goods for sale at the volunteers' monthly hospital stall in the grounds of Wauchope's IGA Supermarket.
In addition to fundraising efforts, the group has provided more than 4500 hours of volunteer work in the past year, and a further 4500 hours of volunteering during 2013. The tally is expected to grow significantly this year as a result of the volunteers committing to the Palliative Care Unit, on top of the daily rosters in the main section of the hospital.
