AFTER a nail-biting finish, Wauchope High School has won the 40th anniversary inter-school challenge with Sydney’s Cumberland High School.
Wauchope was trailing a day and a half into the competition, and needed to win four of the five matches on the final morning on Friday if they were to take out the shield.
The students dug deep, putting their best foot forward in each and every match until the final whistle blew. The girls soccer team were particularly impressive.
They told the Gazette before their match they were going to “play harder than they had ever before” and did just that, smashing their opposition 11-0.
Final tally of the matches won and lost on Friday: Wauchope five, Cumberland zero.Yes, done and dusted with one to spare!
The cheers from the students and staff could be heard streets away. Retired teacher Bob Smith, the teacher who invited Cumberland to take part in a yearly interschool challenge 40 years ago, was on hand for all two and a half days of competition, and not surprisingly had a grin from ear to ear.
“It’s a fantastic event and I hope it continues forever,” he said. “It really lifts the teachers’ and students’ spirits and helps with keeping the students focused and positive.”
