The Blues first grade side were looking to stamp their mark on the competition and show why they are sitting in second position, however the Port City Breakers had different plans as they outclassed the Blues right from the kick-off.
Starting with a dropped ball in the first set it appeared nothing was going right for the Blues, while the Breakers on the other hand were jumping at every opportunity they got. It was all Port City in the first half and the Blues had their heads down as they went to the half-time break trailing 14-nil.
The second half saw the Blues play a bit more composed footy but it seemed the damage was already done. Points came Wauchope’s way in the second half through none other than the 100 games celebrant Beau Kettle. Kettle used his weight to barge through the line and get the Blues on the board.
Port City were still on the hunt and as fatigue kicked in, and Blues’ poor decisions in defence saw the Breakers run away with the game 32-8.
In the other grades the League tag girls put up a good fight, narrowly going down to the breakers 4-nil. All the effort was there for the girls, they just couldn’t get over the line.
The under 18s continued their great form with another solid win, hanging on to their first place spot on the ladder. The young Blues won the game comfortably 32 point to 4.
Coach Jason Holland was impressed with his team’s effort and is adamant the boys can hold their form into the back end of the season.
In reserve grade the win wasn’t as convincing, but it was certainly nothing short of a spectacle for all who watched.
The Blues took the game out 23-14, with Wally Coombes the star of the show. Scoring two tries wasn’t good enough for the front rower, so right on the stroke of full time he snapped a long range field goal to seal the win.
Wauchope will now travel to Old Bar on Saturday for what will be the last away game of the regular season. If supporters can make their way down the Blues will appreciate the support as they continue to try to place themselves in a good position for the semi-finals which are fast approaching.
Beau Kettle clocks up
BEAU Kettle has just become the newest life member of the Wauchope Blues, after celebrating his 100th first grade game on the weekend to join an exclusive group of players to have achieved the honour.
Kettle has been a great servant for the Blues, playing his part in all of the grand final glory in the past five years as well as being a member of the Group 3 and North Coast teams.
Putting all those achievements aside it would appear that Kettle’s proudest moment in football was taking the field with his son Cooper in his arms, about to play 100 games in the blue and red.
The Wauchope Blues would like to congratulate Beau on his life membership and hope that he is around the club for many more years to come.
