On his visit to Wauchope on Wednesday, Deputy Premier Troy Grant said "we're wasting no time getting down to business, with $7.5 million committed in this year's budget to start planning for the new fleet".
"We will begin procurement this term and will consult with industry prior to finalising a delivery schedule," he said.
The NSW Government is preparing a long-term plan for the future of the state's regional rail system, particularly in regard to customer-focused initiatives, service improvements and fleet upgrades.
"This will ensure that fleet procurement matches the needs of customers and the growth of the network," Mr Grant said.
The Nationals leader and Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey will spearhead the initiative, with Mrs Pavey working with the new transport minister Andrew Constance and Transport for NSW to deliver world class transport options for regional passengers.
Mr Grant told the Gazette the initiative may result in regional jobs for track and rail maintenance as these functions were being decentralised from Sydney.
