A Facebook post suggesting the Show Society would not renew a contract with market owners Port Macquarie-Hastings Council was later removed, but not before scores of people threw their support behind the markets.
Show Society president Bob Kennett said he was planning to meet with council representatives on Wednesday (September 30).
"The markets are welcome at the showgound until May 2016 when the board will decide on a new contract, like it has always been done in the past," he told the Gazette.
"What many people may not realise is that the Show Society owns the grounds outright and every event is through the society."
A council spokesperson said "council's economic development team has been working closely with Wauchope Farmers Market stakeholders and will continue to provide support in order to continue the benefits to the Wauchope community".
When asked if the markets will continue to be held at the showground until the current contract expires they said: "Council is continuing to work with all stakeholders in the best interests of the Wauchope community and until such time as there is a clear way forward, is unable to provide further comment".
The markets are held on the fourth Saturday of each month and there are currently 60 stallholders showcasing the talents and products of local growers, makers, bakers and artisans. Between 1000 and 2000 people from across the Mid North Coast and beyond attend each month.
