Members of the Rollands Plains community group road safety committee discovered the hollowed out section of roadway last week during an inspection of the road as part of an audit for a presentation to Port Macquarie-Hastings Council on the lack of maintenance to local rural roads.
Committee member Phillip Morton said the undermined road is at the culvert over Bottlebrush Creek at the western end of Bril Bril Road.
The sub-road hollow, big enough for an adult to sit in, was concealed by lantana until the community road safety group investigated, he said.
Following the discovery of the unsupported roadway the group immediately contacted council and Forests NSW, whose logging contractors' trucks use the route.
Mr Morton said council erected signs and barriers to close the section of road and acted quickly to stabilise the crossing.
While the group is grateful for council's response, they say the unsafe section of road is symptomatic of what they see as the neglect of rural roads "west of the highway".
The cost of repairing these roads is growing rapidly and "rural roads will be a bigger blowout than The Glasshouse, if they (PMHC) don't do something about it," Mr Morton said.
