The prestigious national art competition opened at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney on July 16.
The “Young Archie” competition invites budding artists between the ages of five and 18 to submit a portrait of someone they know.
Sam’s warm, character-filled portrait of his father Aaron was chosen as one of the top five for the 12-15 years age category.
“This is an amazing achievement which reflects his significant talent and the hard work Sam dedicated to his art,” said deputy principal Sharon Westman.
When asked why he created the coloured pencil portrait of his father, Sam said the choice of subject was easy.
“My father is my role model and best friend, so choosing someone who plays an important role in my life was easy,” he said.
“He is intelligent, has a great sense of humour, is kind and caring and is the nicest person you'll ever meet. My dad inspires and motivates me to always do my best and I am very grateful for that."
This year the Young Archie competition was judged by past Archibald winner Del Kathryn Barton.
Sam's artwork will be on display in conjunction with the Archibald exhibition until October 9 and the winner of the "Young Archie" will be announced in September. Best of luck Sam!
