For the next 12 months, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council will waive start-up fees in Wauchope and the Camden Haven, as a trial to encourage restaurants and cafes to have outdoor dining that will attract locals and visitors alike.

The trial, launched in Laurieton on Thursday morning, has been championed by the Wauchope and Camden Haven Chambers of Commerce to stimulate the local economy, support local businesses and increase street appeal in local towns and villages.

Trying something new can be a costly step in business, and having to pay for a development application for outdoor dining can be enough of an excuse not to branch out.

Ged Millgate from Top Spot Cafe and Cakes, where the launch took place, was enthusiastic about the trial.

“Having people outside livens up the street. For us it means more people to our cafe. As far as the community is concerned it will really bring vibrance.

“If we can get cafes and other businesses onto the street to showcase their products, then people who are driving by will see that this town is alive.

“Logistically there were a few things to sort out but the council was very helpful, they made the process very easy.”

Ged said the waiving of the start-up fee made the decision to try outdoor dining a no-brainer.

“I hope others get involved, the council aren’t putting up barriers, they’re helping you get this to happen. I don’t see any reason why other businesses would take up this opportunity,” he said.
