Legislation has passed the NSW Parliament to implement a new science-based system to improve farm productivity, better protect biodiversity, and replace the less-than-effective Native Vegetation Act.
A core election commitment of the NSW Liberals and Nationals government, the legislation repeals Labor’s counter-productive Native Vegetation Act 2003. Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the package allows farmers to get on with managing their land.
It has strong environmental safeguards, sensible limits on vegetation change and offset requirements and exclusions, to assist in delivering landscape-level values. A record investment of $240 million over five years in private land conservation, plus $70 million per year after that, is in addition to $100 million for the Saving Our Species program.
The reforms mark the start of a new relationship between government and farmers. They implement the 43 recommendations of the Independent Biodiversity Legislation Review, and drew on extensive consultation feedback.
The NSW government intends the Biodiversity Conservation Bill 2016 and Local Land Services Amendment Bill 2016 to start in 2017. For more information, visit: www.landmanagement.nsw.gov.au
