It began with local man Graham Lee and friends kicking off a free weekly Friday afternoon barbecue for the community.
Volunteers pitched in to help, the Camden Haven community rallied to support the event by supplying food for the barbecues and non-perishable items for participants to take home like food, toothbrushes, shampoo, moisturisers, towels, etc.
Businesses offered their support by making donations of goods and collecting donations from the community.
Local entertainers have come along to play live music for free at the barbecues, which begin every week behind the Laurieton United Services Club at 3pm.
At Christmas, a lunch was held at North Haven Beach for anyone finding themselves in need of friendly company and a meal.
As the group’s needs and focus widened, adopting the name Camden Haven Community@3 helped give their cause an identify.
Over the course of the last seven months, the Camden Haven Community@3 has identified areas they would like to extend their work, particularly in supporting the homeless.
There are now two sub committees; a hospitality team which organises the Friday barbecue, and a welfare team to help people get in touch with services when they are in need.
What’s needed now are volunteer leaders for those teams.
If you would like to lead either the hospitality or welfare teams, please contact Theo Hazelgrove on 0438 358 057 or Graham Lee 0413 480 999.
