“I am fascinated by movement, the light, the waves.”
Originally from Maryland in the US she moved to the Great Lakes with her family to start an oyster farm.
Susan feels connected to nature and at peace when shooting the water.
“This area we live in delivers up nature photos on a silver platter. It’s beautiful. You have Burgess, One Mile, the calm of Wallis Lake. It’s quite a diverse selection.”
Her other favourite subject is her five-year-old son.
It’s only in the past five years that she has started learning more about the technical aspects of photography but she’s always had a passion for the art form.
“I’ve always adored photography. Capturing a moment in time and creating a memory that might otherwise be lost is exciting. I started with film when I was young—I was captivated by light and shadows.”
Susan enjoys the solitude and being outdoors and experimenting with different shutter speeds and learning new techniques.
“I learn a lot from other photographers. It’s a lifelong process. If you decide to stop learning, you might as well put away your camera.”
She says everyone is a photographer these days and we see it all on social media, so it’s not easy to stand out.

“But that’s ok. I love being inspired by photography and seeing the world through others’ eyes. One could photograph the same place in a hundred different ways. That’s what it’s about for me.”
Whenever she needs inspiration she remembers one of her favourite quotes from pioneering America photographer Alfred Stiegliz who said: “Wherever there is light, one can photograph”.
