Torrential rain earlier in the week forced organisers to shift the venue from Westport Park to Port Macquarie Racecourse main carpark, and it was a winner.
Event organiser Mick Brownlow they’d been washed out of Westport Park and the council were afraid of pedestrians slipping.
“Port Macquarie Racecourse have been so generous in helping us. We will probably continue to use this venue,” he said.
“Everything is here that we need – bitumen surface for the cars and lots of parking.”
Mick was delighted with the turn-out of classic cars and members of the public, and the sun shone.
One of the visitors was country singer and radio presenter, Marcia Wells.
“I just love the old cars. They have a lot of characters and they’re so tough,” she said.
“I’m a Ford fan myself, but I love the Holdens. I had an old Holden Kingswood back in the early ‘70s,” she reminisced.
One of the stars of the show was an A9X tribute to Peter Brock’s car which won the 1979 Bathurst.
Corey and Cazz Hindley brought it to Port from Bundaberg in Queensland.
“I’ve always had classic cars,” said Corey.
“And this is definitely the favourite. They would have to pay my house off to take this one. It creates a stir, it’s a real magnet and we take it to a lot of charity events.”
Proving that old school is cool, Jeanette and Graham Sills, dressed in appropriate outfits, drove two 1962 classic Holdens down from Grafton.
“We come here every year, and we always dress up. We’d like to go back in time,” said Jeanette.
As well as the old cars, there were trade stands, hot food, cold drinks and entertainment.
All funds will go to the local SES and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter support group.
Bruce Cant from the helicopter support group said they love being involved and that the classic car owners are great to work with.
“They’re very generous with their money and it’s fun day for everyone,” he said.
