On Easter Saturday, April 15, the hospital will be open for all and will include a fun-filled festival designed to engage the public while raising conservation awareness.
“Our annual Open Days are the main fundraiser for us each year, and this year we are looking to build on the great activities of yesteryear,” said Scott Castle of the Koala Hospital.
“We’ll have some of the all-time great games and activities, as well the stalls that have been popular over the years, including the cake and treats stall; jams and pickles that rival the big names; the White Elephant area; and a huge book sale.”
Hello Koalas representatives will have the latest information on the trail for patrons, who can take photos with the latest addition to the koala family, Ranger Riley.
Opening the day will have Uncle Bill performing a welcome to Birpai country ceremony.
“After face painting we recommend getting raffle tickets early, as the raffles and a chocolate wheel will be running all day, with the best prizes going early,” Mr Castle said.
“We also advise everyone to check out the silent auctions, and live auctions.”
Other entertainment includes the ukulele band Z Chords, Sing Australia, the belly dancer Amelia, and children’s entertainer Troppo Bob.
Singer and guitarist Daniel Hopkins will perform with Devonshire tea served outside the Historic Roto House beside the hospital.
There will be BBQs serving bacon and egg rolls for breakfast, and sausage sandwiches all day, with vegetarian options also available.
“Our interactive museum exhibit will be open, featuring mounted koalas; sculptured koala habitat installed by Frugal Arts, and made with recycled materials; a user friendly microscope; and life-history and historical koala information that offers an interesting learning experience for all ages,” he said.
“We will also have our regular koalas on exhibit and we will be operating guided tours throughout the day.
“We’d like to encourage everybody to drop in or enjoy the whole day with us this Easter Saturday, to help us raise funds and have some fun with our fluffy residents and team of volunteers.”
The main festivities will run between 9am and 2pm, and the hospital will be open until 4pm as usual.
All money raised goes directly into operating and maintaining the hospital, who not only treat sick and injured local and regional koalas, but are also a research facility, collaborating with organisations across Australia.
