ALONE IN BAD COMPANY: Great title for the latest album from a great singer. ARIA award-winning Jeff Lang is back at Wauchope Arts with support Tullara on Saturday.

Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Jeff Lang has included Wauchope Arts Hall on his national tour in support of his new album, Alone In Bad Company.

Jeff Lang is back on Saturday night, May 20, with up-and-coming singer Tullara as his support act.

He’s playing solo, using a bunch of different instruments, including mandolin, slide guitar, resonator guitar, and a regular acoustic guitar.

“I’ll be putting them all to use playing songs from my new album, Alone In Bad Company and a mix of stuff from previous releases,” he says.

I stockpile songs, and then the dam has to burst.

Jeff says he created the album mostly on his own over a period of time.

“I stockpile songs, and then the dam has to burst.  A veritable geyser of songs spills forth,” he says with a smile.

“The songs just have to hang together in some kind of way.  It’s an album, not just a collection of tracks.  That’s to do with the sound of the album as well as the songs.”

Jeff says he just likes it when songs show up, and for him, writing is great fun when it’s happening.

In a career spanning 25 years and at least as many recordings, Alone In Bad Company presents the most organic union of Lang’s talents and influences yet.

Released through ABC Music on February 24 this year, Alone In Bad Company is filled with exquisitely sung stories and melodies demonstrating that, Lang is nothing if not a lover of song.

The first single from the album is ‘Burnside’ which immediately highlights Lang’s proficiency as one of Australia’s best guitarists with rapid fingerpicking and guitar work.

Each song on the album is rendered such that an alternative approach is unimaginable and each time Lang steps up to solo, his hard-won style is unmistakable – fluid but with an edge-of-the-seat recklessness.

Jeff’s influences range from Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Ry Cooder to Richard Thompson, Nina Simone and Indian and African music, with blues and British folk music thrown in.

Jeff is full of praise for the Wauchope Arts committee and says they really know how to engage with the local community and attract great audiences.
