The RSPCA Port Macquarie branch will host the annual million paws walk on Sunday May 21.
While the day will be colourful and full of fun, the serious side is that all monies raised will help the fight against animal cruelty.
The RSPCA will use the funds to assist the shelter and pound running their ongoing community based projects. Specifically, this year’s funds are for the Maddison Program, which provides specialist medical and dental care to animals seeking a new home, said RSPCA spokesperson Anita Fletcher.
“All animal lovers are encouraged to dust off their walking shoes and come out to enjoy the festivities and support the local RSPCA branch,” she said.
“We have to emphasise that the event is for humans and dogs only.”
For the uninitiated, dogs must be on a leash; no ‘in-season’ dogs; feed a light breakfast as some dogs may become overexcited; and bring a poop bag.
The gates open at 9.15am and the walk will start at 10am. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children over five years and concession holders or $20 for a family of four (two adults, two children).
“With the beautiful setting of Oxley Oval, we will also have the Port Macquarie Hastings Concert Band playing for festive flavour,” Anita said.
“In addition to the opportunity to mingle with like-minded animal lovers, we offer a sausage sizzle – for humans and dogs – barista coffee, great cakes and slices will be available.
“There will be other attractions on the day as well, including RSPCA merchandise.”
Information booths and stalls manned by council rangers and veterinary practices, including East Port, Dr Paws and Greencross will be attending.
