The Beechwood Rugby League Old Boys ranks have thinned over recent weeks following the death of three former players.
Second World War digger Neville Hinton was a member of post War years Beechwood teams when the Shamrocks and the Comboyne Club mixed it each week with the best teams Port Macquarie and Wauchope could field against them in the Hastings competition.
Bernie McCudden was a competition winner with the Club in the next decade when his mate Jimmy Cavanagh captained the Shamrocks. McCudden played in the Alan Bain Cup win of 1957 under the honorary coaching of international forward Arthur Collinson.
Old Boys members farewelled Alan Newman last week. A long serving committeeman after a short playing career, also in the 50’s, Alan was a life member of the Beechwood Club.
His contribution to other community groups was recognised by a large congregation at his farewell. Alan was also remembered for his unselfish community work when he was named Wauchope Apex/Gazette Citizen of the year in 1981.
