I wonder if we, the residents of Wauchope, have been delivered a hint that the re-siting of the High street zebra pedestrian crossing is not to happen in the near future.
Recently, an elderly visitor from Kempsey tripped on the newly painted strips of the High street crossing. The lady fell and injured an arm which meant that she could not drive herself back home.
The crossings have been topped up by a very thick coat of paint. This has now raised the white stripe to ‘trip level’. I also know of one gentleman who tripped but managed to regain his balance. How many others have done the ‘Wauchope Wobble’?
Whilst on the subject of crossings, I have noticed that trying to cross High Street on the crossings is increasingly fraught with danger, when car drivers have tried to race across in front of me even though cars on the other side of the road had given me the right of way.
I use the word ‘race’ advisedly for the offenders to increase their speed to get across before me. Accelerator depressions can be heard and recognised for what they are: blow you Jack, I’m going through!
Perhaps it’s time for cameras to be placed in High Street so that offending speedsters can pay for their speed.
Pedestrians could be more obliging as well. A few extra seconds or even a minute waiting for a clear space in the traffic would be helpful too.
I can appreciate the chagrin of motorists when they have passed through the rail crossing only to see a line of traffic up to the post office going at snail’s pace or stationary.
It’s nice to know that some of us are able to be helpful and caring to passersby even whilst running a busy business.
I’m glad we’ve extended a welcome to the Ulysses Club members – why not extend one to each other in an over growing town even when we’re in High Street?
